## Nearby research breadth

- **UC Berkeley CEE PhD:** excellent civil systems, climate/infrastructure,
  construction data science, digital twins, and designated emphases such as
  computational/data science and global metropolitan studies.
- **UC Santa Cruz:** potential computational/environmental collaborator southwest
  of San José, but not the primary conventional CEE route.
- **Nevada–Reno:** wider Sierra option for mountain ecohydrology, remote sensing,
  fire/forest disturbance, and streamflow-generation research.

## Degree choice

1. Choose a **CEE PhD** when an advisor supports the research and the offer pays
   tuition, health coverage, and a workable stipend.
2. Choose **computational social science** when causal inference, institutions,
   behavior, and infrastructure adoption—not hydraulic design—become the central
   question.
3. Choose an **MSCE** as a prerequisite bridge or professional credential only
   after comparing net price, licensure value, and doctoral placement.
4. Keep a **JD** for a future water/infrastructure law or policy turn. Its usual
   self-funded cost and weak fit with the immediate technical research agenda
   make it lower priority now.

## Faculty-fit search rubric

Score each potential advisor from 0–2 on: watershed/stormwater substance;
sensing/computer vision; probabilistic or systems modeling; infrastructure or
public impact; funding evidence; mentoring record; and willingness to support a
nontraditional engineering entrant. Apply only when the total is at least 9/14
and there is a credible dissertation-sized question.
